Punakawan adalah karakter yang khas dalam wayang Indonesia. Mereka melambangkan orang kebanyakan. Karakternya mengindikasikan bermacam-macam peran, seperti penasihat para ksatria, penghibur, kritisi sosial, badut bahkan sumber kebenaran dan kebijakan. Dalam wayang Jawa karakter punakawan terdiri atas Semar, Gareng, Bagong, dan Petruk.
